Significance of Philosophy for Science

Science is often viewed as standalone discipline with its own unique methods and approaches. However, science relies heavily on the principles of philosophy to guide its methods, assumptions, and interpretations. In fact, without a solid foundation in philosophy, science would struggle to define its purpose, goals, and ethical boundaries. 

Traditionally, science was studied as sub-discipline of philosophy called as Natural Philosophy. However, in 17th century it was divorced from philosophy and was presented as a separate discipline. Because of this we are seeing more technicians among scientists than profound thinkers. 

One of the key differences between the natural philosophers of earlier times and the scientist' of today is the approach they took to their work. While modern scientists rely on empirical evidence and the scientific method to test their theories and hypotheses, philosophers often relied on reason, logic, and intuition to arrive at their conclusions. This difference in approach does not diminish the importance or validity of the work done by philosophers in earlier times, but it does highlight the ways in which the practice of science has evolved over the centuries. However, some modern-day scientists are also polymaths and are well versed in philosophy, history, social science, mathematics and others.
